Dating in Australia: meet single men and women in your city

Australia is one of the most city-living countries on earth. Most of us are packed into a handful of coastal capitals with a whole lot of empty space in between. For dating, that shapes everything. You're almost certainly not going to meet someone in another state, so your city is your dating world, and the good news is there are thousands of single people in it. Around 26 million people live in Australia, and roughly three in ten adults have tried online dating, most of them in the cities below.

This page is a straight guide to dating in each of them: the feel of the place, where people actually go, and how the numbers stack up. Then you can jump into your own city and start meeting people.

Real people, already nearby

The members here are real, not stock photos or bots. Make a free profile and you'll see who's near you within a couple of minutes.

Dating city by city

Australia isn't one dating scene, it's a string of very different ones. Here's how the main cities actually feel, and where to start.

Dating in Sydney

Sydney is fast and a bit image-aware. People make an effort, the bar is set high, and first dates often happen over harbour views or a coastal walk. The numbers tell their own story: the inner-city party suburbs like Surry Hills and Darlinghurst run heavily male in the prime dating years, while the harbourside east and inner-west lean the other way. If you're after something relaxed, the Bondi-to-Bronte walk or the little bars of Newtown beat a fancy dinner any day. For more, see our guide to unique date ideas in Sydney.

Dating in Melbourne

Melbourne dates differently to Sydney. It's social, creative and built around neighbourhoods. The laneways, the wine bars of Fitzroy, the street art on Brunswick Street, a wander through Federation Square or a picnic in the Royal Botanic Gardens, these are the natural first-date settings. People here tend to take it slowly and let things grow out of a few relaxed catch-ups rather than one big night. The city has a touch more women than men, so for blokes it's worth putting thought into your profile.

Dating in Brisbane

Brisbane is the most relaxed of the big three. The weather does a lot of the work, so dates drift outdoors: the river, South Bank, a stroll then a drink in Fortitude Valley. It's a younger-feeling city with a lifestyle-first attitude, less about impressing and more about an easy afternoon that runs into the evening. A river ferry ride at sunset is about as Brisbane as a first date gets.

Dating in Perth

Perth is spread out and built around the coast, so dating here runs on the beach, the sunset and a decent plan. Sundowners on the sand, a wander through Northbridge, a coffee with an ocean view. Western Australia is also the one part of the country where men slightly outnumber women, thanks to the mining sector, so the usual national picture is flipped, especially outside the city.

Dating in Adelaide

Adelaide is food, wine and an easy pace, with the Hills and the Barossa on the doorstep. It's also the capital with the most women relative to men, so it's a genuine "man drought" city, good odds for the blokes, a competitive but lively scene for women. First dates lean into what the city does best: a long lunch, a cellar door, a riverbank walk.

And the rest

Gold Coast is beaches and a holiday mood year-round. Canberra skews young and well-educated, with a steady stream of new arrivals for work and study. Hobart is small, arty and food-driven, with more women than men. Darwin is the outlier: tropical, transient and the one capital where men clearly outnumber women.

Single men and women across Australia

Across the country there are a little under 99 men for every 100 women, so women edge it overall. The gap is widest at older ages, by the time you're in your eighties there are far more women than men, which matters if you're dating over 50.

Where it gets interesting is how much it changes by place. Adelaide and Hobart have the fewest men relative to women of the capitals. Darwin is the only capital where men are clearly ahead. Western Australia leans male thanks to mining. And within a single city it can swing street by street: the young, going-out suburbs of inner Sydney run male-heavy, while leafier, older areas run female. The takeaway isn't to chase the odds, it's that your real local pool is nothing like the national average, so searching your actual area beats guessing.

Free to join, straight about the rest

No card to sign up, and no wall before you've even had a look around. Your profile, your photos, searching, browsing and seeing who likes you are all free. The part you pay for is messaging, and we run free trials so you can try even that before committing. Yes - it's absolutely free to register. With a free membership, you can explore the whole site, search and look at the profiles of other members and create your own profile - preferably with a photo attached. If you stay with a free membership, rather than upgrading, you'll be restricted to only having one photo on your profile and there will be limits on the messaging system. What it boils down to is that the free membership is a great way to dip your toes into the water and see if online dating is right for you. When you want to take things further, our cheap membership rates will open up even more features to help you connect with other singles.

It's simple really, we use the location you tell us to narrow down and provide more accurate matches for you with people in your local area. We'll never tell anyone your exact location.

Any personal information that you give us is kept securely in an encrypted format. They will never be shared with other members of the service, and we encourage you never to put personally identifiable information on your profile page like phone numbers, emails or addresses. Our secure communication tools will allow you to easily and freely chat and exchange messages with your fellow members within the site.

For most people, especially if you're single and within the ages of 18 and 49, we'd recommend just using the general site. There're people from all over Australia looking for love, so you won't be short of people to connect with. If you fall into an older age category, or you have some specific requirements for a partner, then why not look at one of our niche sites? People will often choose to date within specific parameters to do with shared religion, or as single parents to help them weed out people who aren't a good mix for where they are in life. Whatever your approach, membership is free across all our sites, so can create an account on more than one of them and then see which approach to dating you prefer.

Start dating today

It really couldn't be simpler or quicker to get started with us. The only thing you really need is a working email address so that we can send you your login details. It's as simple as 1-2-3.

  • 1 Just answer the simple questions in the registration form above
  • 2 Check your email for your confirmation link
  • 3 Start looking to see who else is online or recently registered

As soon as your login details have been confirmed, our best advice is that you take a bit of time to complete your profile information. We only ask for some basic information when you sign up, but there's plenty more to do once you're in. The more you answer from the profile questions, the easier other people will find it to find you. In addition, our compatibility matches get more accurate when suggesting other people that you might like to get in touch with. Adding a photo makes it ten times more likely that you'll receive responses to your icebreakers and messages, so find one that shows you in your best light and show off a bit!
